SpringBoard schools to work with

SpringBoard works with a wide range of state and independent boarding schools across the country, in order to suit best the needs of SpringBoard pupils. Before any school can work with us, we put it through a rigorous accreditation process.

Steps to accreditation by SpringBoard

  1. Inspection Report: SpringBoard reviews this in depth: it is a public document, available for everyone to see on the school’s website. The inspection is carried out regularly by government appointed organisations and looks into the academic and pastoral strengths of the school in great detail. It is really useful as a guide to whether the school offers a really good boarding experience.
  2. Self-assessment form: SpringBoard requires each school to complete this form, which goes into great detail about how the school should look after SpringBoard pupils. It gives us assurance that the school has thought carefully about through the process of admitting a SpringBoard pupil, helping them to settle in and looking after them through their time at the school. How the school communicates with parents is part of this.
  3. School visit: SpringBoard staff visit the school and pay particular attention to the boarding houses and the staff who will be looking after your child. See What does SpringBoard look for when visiting a school?.
  4. Schools Training Day: SpringBoard runs a training day every year and invites delegates from SpringBoard schools and partners to come together to share experiences, learn from each other and discuss issues such as the best way to integrate new pupils.

What does SpringBoard look for when visiting a school?

The visit is conducted either by SpringBoard’s CEO, Ian Davenport, or SpringBoard’s Director of Schools Relationships, Fiona Weldin. Both have many years’ experience of running boarding houses themselves and teaching in boarding schools. Ian was Headmaster of a boarding school and is a bursary pupil himself. Both Ian and Fiona have been through the experience of having their own children board.

During the visit, we expect to meet the Head, the key staff in charge of boarding and pastoral care and current students. Once SpringBoard pupils start at a school, SpringBoard staff visit regularly to see how they are getting on and to get an up to date picture of the school.

The following are the sorts of things to which we give careful consideration during the visit:

  •  What is the ‘feel’ of the school? Do the pupils look happy and confident?
  •  How good are the boarding facilities and the boarding staff?
  •  How are the boarding houses organised – eg all year 9 together or years 9 to 13 together?
  •  What is the proportion of boarders to day pupils?
  •  What is the weekend programme for boarders?
  •  Does the school have a good mix of pupils from different backgrounds and nationalities?
  •  What are the teaching facilities like and does the school specialise in any way?
